Château de Pennautier
A château and its vineyards going back four centuries ! One of the oldest winemaking châteaux in France.
An exceptional terroir
In the heart of PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) Cabardès, a stone’sthrow from Carcassonne, characterized by east and west winds, the vineyards climb the sunny and stony hillsides of the Black Mountains, between 230 and 360 meters altitude. Stunning views, which at a glance, take in the Pyrenees to the south and Massif Central to the north, with the famous walled city of Carcassonne just 5km away.
This unique terroir combines chalk and clay and Mediterranean heat. The climate undergoes Atlantic influence and mountain coolness. These rare and unique traits of Cabardès allow the pairing of Atlantic varietals (Malbec, Cabernet & Merlot) with Mediterranean varietals like Grenache and Syrah.
With 30 years of patience garrigue and rocky zones, which have been abandoned over a century, have been reclaimed in the Black Mountains at an altitude of 360m. The Château de Pennautier started its organic conversion in 2019.
An Unusual Story
Family archives, since 1580, of the family Reich de Pennautier, reveal that Château de Pennautier, built in 1620 by Bernard Reich de Pennautier, Treasurer of the States of Languedoc, is a the heart of the family Estate
In 1710, wines from Pennautier were served at the royal officers’ table in Versailles. The château was handed down from generation to generation and, in 1960, thanks to the insight of Alain de Lorgeril, father of Nicolas, the vineyards were replanted with new vine stocks, over reclaimed scrubland and at a higher altitude.
Nicolas and Miren de Lorgeril are the 10th generation of vintners to inherit Pennautier, which they took over in 1987.
Héritiers directs des Pennautier, Nicolas et Miren de Lorgeril sont la 10e génération de vignerons depuis la création du domaine qu’ils ont repris en 1987.
